Enterprise-Level Security at Entry-Level Cost
Belfast, Northern Ireland – 29 August 2025 – CEM Systems, part of the Security Products business unit of Johnson Controls, announces the launch of the ioSmart Secure DESFire Smart Card Reader and the ioSmart 4-Door Access Control Bundle. This latest innovation delivers robust, encrypted access control designed specifically for small sites and satellite offices—combining trusted AC2000 enterprise-level security with streamlined, cost-effective deployment.
The ioSmart Reader is a contactless, RFID-encrypted smart card reader built on DESFire technology and secured with advanced AES-128 encryption. As CEM Systems’ second-generation DESFire reader, it replaces the legacy sPass reader and supports the Door Control Module (DCM) range of intelligent controllers as a unified, secure solution for panel-based installations. It integrates seamlessly with the DCM 400 and DCM 200 controllers via the Open Supervised Device Protocol Version 2 (OSDP v2) standard, and with the legacy DCM 350 controller through a proprietary encrypted serial protocol.
Key Features:
• DESFire EV3 technology with ISO/IEC 14443A/B support
• End-to-end encryption from smart card to AC2000 server
• Optional capacitive keypad with “PIN as Card” functionality
• Auto-detect protocol from ioSmart reader to controller for plug-and-protect installation
• Cyber-resilient architecture with secure boot, firmware updates, and storage
• Offers Seamless migration from legacy MIFARE CSN to encrypted DESFire credentials
CEM Systems has built a strong reputation for end-to-end access control encryption across its entire family of card readers. The ioSmart reader, like all CEM Systems readers, is engineered for cyber resilience and delivers robust encryption, ensuring data is secure from the smart card to the AC2000 server. The solution features secure Personal ID (PID) reading, secondary keyset rolling, and avoids persistent key storage on the reader, further reinforcing CEM Systems’ commitment to secure, intelligent access control.
Smart Card Encryption Flexibility
Customers can manage their own AES-128 smart card keysets using the AC2000 Smart Card Utility application, offering greater flexibility and enhanced protection for smart cards. The AC2000 software also supports remote configuration of ioSmart Readers, enabling card definitions and encryption keys to be securely downloaded directly to hardware devices. This removes the need for physical configuration cards or mobile provisioning apps during on-site installation—streamlining setup and reducing deployment time.
